Telecommunications

CPRE priorities

CPRE is concerned that the countryside is suffering unacceptably and unnecessarily as a result of telecommunications development. Whilst having no objection to the creation of national telecommunications networks, CPRE wishes to see this take place with minimum impact on the countryside.

The permissive stance of planning guidance (PPG8) towards the telecommunications industry and the weakness of planning controls (with much development granted permitted development rights) has resulted in a rash of masts across the countryside.

There is little sign of co-ordinated and systematic approach to the provision of masts by the four major operators' networks. In many instances separate masts, owned by different operators, can be found within a short distance of each other.

CPRE believes that operators will only come together and make more efficient use of fewer masts if there are regulations in place which require them to do so.
