A Legacy for Lancashire
Legacies are the main source of income to the Lancashire Branch of the CPRE. Our campaign work to protect the beauty of the local landscape owes much to the generosity of past members. In the UK almost 70% of the population support a charity, if you are a member of the CPRE you are already in that 70%. Fewer than 5% of people remember a charity in their will. The CPRE leaflet “ when I go, I want to be pushing up the daisies” explains how easy it is to ensure that your chosen charity benefits from your will. Please contact the Lancashire Branch office for copies of this leaflet.
What types of legacy are there ? A residual legacy - part or all of the remains of your estate after all the other bequest, debts, tax and expenses have been paid. A specific legacy - a gift of a particular item such a house or shares. A pecuniary legacy - a specified cash sum.
How do I leave a leave a legacy ? It is easy to include a charity in your will, but you should seek professional advice from a solicitor or financial advisor. This way you can ensure that your will reflects your intentions and you can be advised of tax implications. The CPRE leaflet recommends that the following wording be suggested to your solicitor:
You may wish to leave your legacy to the CPRE nationally or other Branches. Further advice may obtained from Stephen White at the London office, tel 020 7981 2800.
But before you do anything… Take time to be sure of your thoughts and decide exactly what you want to do. The Remember a Charity web site contains more information about legacies. The Charities Aid Foundation site contains useful information about tax savings and donations generally.
