A Green City?

With the help of local volunteers CPRE respond to planning applications affecting the countryside and greenbelt of Salford District.

What is Salford's UDP?

The UDP (Unitary Development Plan) is the sole statutory land- use plan for the whole City. This document provides the framework for development decisions and determines what the land is used for.

Rural Salford

The rural areas of Salford include Croal-Irwell Valley, Linnyshaw, Worsley, Boothstown and Chat Moss with residential areas of Worsley and Boothstown.

  • about one third of its area is made up of land within the Green Belt
  • there are substantial areas of woodland, including Worsley Woods, Botany Bay Wood and Middlewood
  • the Croal-Irwell Valley is a major green wedge which penetrates into the heart of the City
  • there are 16 conservation areas and over 250 listed buildings
  • 34 sites of Biological importance
  • there are many pleasant residential and industrial areas.

The purpose of Salford's Green Belt

i) the check the unrestricted sprawl of large built up areas
ii) to prevent neighbouring towns from merging into one another
iii) to assist in safeguarding the countryside from encroachment
iv) to preserve the setting and special character of historic towns
and
v) to assist in urban regeneration by encouraging the recycling of derelict land and other urban land
